“Better to be lowly in spirit along with the oppressed than to share plunder with the proud.”
– Proverbs 16:19 (NIV)
There is something very offensive to God about pride. It is so stinking and obnoxious that the Bible recommends that it is better to sit with the poor than share wealth with proud and arrogant people.
Proverbs 29:23 says “A man’s pride will bring him low, But a humble spirit will obtain honor”. The Message translation reads “Pride lands you flat on your face; humility prepares you for honors.”
Often times, pride comes from accomplishments and comparison. When a person forgets that all he has, (abilities, successes, and prizes) are gifts and graces from God, he slips into this sin and begins to worship self.
Our self-righteousness, our victories, our diadems of glory – everything means nothing when placed side by side the Glory of Our Great God. We must all be careful to deal with this sin, most especially in our heart.
Whenever you begin to feel like you are the best thing to happen to the world, pause and remember this words …“God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” (James 4:6b)
In Jesus Name I declare
I confess and repent of every secret sin of pride in my mind. I cast down every vain imagination and take every thought captive in obedience to Christ and His saving grace.
I do not have the spirit of pride and arrogance. I have the Spirit of Love. I have a humble and teachable Spirit. Amen.
