Look Like Jesus

“For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s; on them, he has set the world. He will guard the feet of his faithful servants, but the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness”
— 1 Samuel 2:8b – 9a

Nowadays, so much depends on looking cool and fitting in, especially in the early years, teens and young adults. We want everyone to know that we’re as cool as they are, have the same taste, can afford the latest styles, and know what is trending. In fact, the culture oozes uniformity.

In 1 Samuel 8, (please read it) the conversation between Samuel and God revealed God’s sadness at the Israelites because they made a choice to be like the nations around them.

So why can’t we be like everyone else?

God wants something better for us. He wants us to be so different that we attract others to Him and His ways.

“Everyone else” indeed has their kings (reigning principles, ideologies), but they also have rampant idolatry (worship of things) and barbaric behavior (sin). They worship pagan gods (self, money, ego) and seek no guidance from the one true God on how to live with and treat each other.

If the Israelites were to become like “everyone else,” how could God build his nation? How would they be able to attract others to him?

Whether you are in middle school or coveting a new car or real estate just like the one your neighbor has, it is a lot easier trying to be like everyone else. But God wants us to be different. Not weird or eccentric, but different.

He is in relentless pursuit of people to join His perfect community, where they will spend eternity with Him.

By living splendidly unlike “everyone else,” we give others a glimpse into what life in this community will be like. God doesn’t want us to be just like everyone else; He wants us to be known by our love. He wants us to look like Jesus.

Dear Heavenly Father, I repent of wanting to be like everyone else. I repent of following the crowd. I receive grace to be different. I will stay faithful and committed to my purpose and assignment for you. Help me to grow into the measure of the fullness of the stature of Christ. I will look like Jesus, Not anyone else. In Jesus Name I pray. Amen.
